Letters to the Editor

Letter: Be welcoming to all

The Jewish community in Anchorage is welcoming and thriving and beautiful.

The Muslim community in Anchorage is welcoming and thriving and beautiful.

I moved to Anchorage two years ago because Anchorage is the most welcoming and supportive place I’ve been in the whole country, and both communities are exemplary of this.

Our Jewish Museum and synagogues have vibrant, very visible signage.

In contrast, Anchorage’s mosque is entirely unmarked. Only when you enter you quickly realize it’s one of the most welcoming and most incredible places in Anchorage. It makes me sad that the mosque and our uniquely amazing Muslim community sometimes have to kind of hide.

I want my new hometown to be as welcoming and supportive as it can be. I encourage the city government, Assembly, and all of us in Anchorage to stand against prejudice and oppression and publicly support a ceasefire in Palestine — above all to show support for our own communities.
