Letter: Voting recommendations

Here in the Anchorage municipality, we have residents from Eklutna, Chugiak, Eagle River, Anchorage and Girdwood. But regardless of where we live, we can all agree that the last few years have been rocky, from scarce housing to snow piled deep in neighborhood roads, and a school district facing tough decisions. This year’s election offers ways to move forward. Your vote can make a difference. Here’s what I recommend: Voters have a chance to turn things around at the municipal level by electing a new mayor. Suzanne LaFrance has the ideal combination of a collaborative style and municipal experience. She’ll hire qualified staff and work with the public and Assembly. I urge everyone to vote for Suzanne LaFrance for mayor.

On the school board, current members Pat Higgins, Carl Jacobs and Dora Wilson have been working hard to keep the lights on while respecting educators and the right to read. They all deserve to be re-elected.

On this year’s bonds, Prop. 1 is an opportunity to help schools by fixing and maintaining old buildings. Other bonds give us a better quality of life by funding municipal departments that work with services like roads and snow removal. I encourage you to pass those, too.

Election Day is April 2, but you can vote by mail before then. Please read the League of Women Voters ballot review to learn more about the election, and follow the ballot directions carefully to make sure your vote will count. If we take the time to vote, we have the power to turn things around.
