Chugiak girls fend off Dimond to take championship in Lady Lynx Prep Shootout

Chugiak held off a late Dimond surge to knock off the tourney host 55-53 in the championship Saturday in the Lady Lynx Prep Shootout girls basketball tournament at Dimond High.

The Mustangs had a tough road to the title. They downed top-ranked Wasilla in the Friday semifinals before beating the second-ranked Lynx to collect the gold-bracket crown.

Ashlynn Burgess led Chugiak's balanced scoring with 15 points, Nicole Pinckney added 13 points and Kassidy Murfin chipped in 11.

Chugiak, which sank nine 3-pointers, held Dimond to 3 of 27 shooting from beyond the arc.

Alissa Pili and Jahnnah Hajdukovich combined for 40 points for the Lynx, which scored 11 of the game's final 12 points before missing a game-tying layup in the final second.

Pili was honored as the tournament's gold bracket MVP.

In the maroon bracket, which consisted of the losing team's from the tournament's first day, Ituau Tuisaula's double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds lifted Soldotna over South 50-41 in the championship game.

The Stars never outscored South by more than four points in a quarter, but they kept a steady lead at each buzzer.

Aliann Schmidt added 13 points, nine rebounds and went 5 of 5 from the free-throw line for Soldotna. The Stars outrebounded South 41-20.

Tuisaula earned maroon bracket MVP honors.

Nani Garner (15 points) and Lily Weimann (11) paced the Wolverines.

Daniel Headings scored 28 points and went 6 of 7 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to boost Wasilla past West 57-48 in nonconference boys basketball action Saturday at West.

West led by one point heading into the fourth quarter, but Wasilla outscored 19-9 in the final frame.

Joey Barranco's 10 points and Qyntyn Pilcher's nine paced the Eagles. Isaac Houck added 10 for Wasilla.
