Noatak girls upset defending champion Lumen Christi of Anchorage to open 1A state basketball tournament

The first day of the 2024 ASAA state championship tournament saw the 16 best boys and girls teams from across Alaska face off for a chance to advance to the quarterfinals. One of the most stunning results of the day was No. 11 seed Napaaqtugmiut School of Noatak’s upset of No. 6 seed and defending girls state champion Lumen Christi of Anchorage 35-26.

Led by junior forward Brooke Schaeffer’s double double with a game high 14 points and 12 rebounds, the Lynx outpaced the Archangels. She was one of just three players in the game to reach double figures in scoring; the other two were her teammate Danielle Onalik, with 12 points, and Lumen Christi’s Amara Warren, who nearly had half of her team’s point total with 12.
