For Her Tern racers, mimosas and massages are just part of the reward

All that stood between about 800 women and post-race mimosas and massages at Sunday's Her Tern Half and Quarter Marathon finish line was Happy Hill. The final incline, a sharp rise on N Street in downtown Anchorage, is deceptively named, and while it didn't necessarily generate smiles from everyone with lactic acid-filled legs, employees from the Skinny Raven running store and signs both offered tired racers encouragement.

The fifth annual Her Tern race is named after Skinny Raven's boutique shoe store and is the company's lone women-only race.

Mandy Vincent-Lang won the Half Marathon (13.1 miles) in 1 hour, 26 minutes, 11 seconds. She beat Michelle Baxter, the 2016 winner, by 45 seconds. North Dakota high school runner Caleigh Anderson topped the Quarter Marathon (6.5 miles) field by more than one minute in 47:31.

The signs on Happy Hill made references to movies and running.

One sign read: "Run Like You've Taken Something from Liam Neeson."

Another: "Each of you is a beauty that runs like a beast."

Emma Bohman and other Skinny Raven staffers ran up and down the hill several times, encouraging racers. For Bohman, the race is more than a one-day event. Her Tern provides a 12-week training group for women preparing for the races. Sunday's event included trainees who generated significant improvement and one of the rewards offered were mimosas, a combination of champagne and orange juice.

"Everyone can do our training group, which is like the biggest thing we promote about it and why we enjoy doing it," Bohman said.

She noted that some people walk. Other women tell her they couldn't have done the race without her. Bohman demurred — the runners are the ones who make the effort, she said.

Three women Bohman helped coach this summer – TC Liu, Justin Calvin, and Laura Harris – saw massive gains in fitness and running knowledge.

Liu competed in the Mayor's Half-Marathon in June, but faltered before finishing. She said she walked the final three miles because she was running on empty. Her coaches used that experience to help her improve her race nutrition and stay positive.

"I (ran) happy (Sunday)," Liu said. "(Bohman) told me (Saturday), 'Keep smiling, smiling when you run.' … It was a good day so I kept smiling all the way."

Liu has competed in more than 20 half-marathons, and said her Sunday time of 1:55:28 was a personal record.

Calvin began the training program with a timed mile in 7:11. She became stronger, and Sunday averaged 8-minute miles for 13.1 miles. Calvin learned to set goals – big and small – and believe in herself. It also "doesn't suck that we end with mimosas," she said.

Harris said she received "a little extra love on" Happy Hill. She could hear her coach imploring her to "crush the hill."

Mark Iverson, Skinny Raven's director of events and timing, remembers another woman who could hardly walk a mile when she started the training program. Three months later, she finished the half-marathon.

Bohman said more than 120 women participated in the training program that is in its fourth year. The group met twice a week – Wednesdays for speed workouts and Saturdays for distance. Distance means running (or walking) for 2 hours and 15 minutes "so when they do come to the Half-Marathon, they're ready for it," Bohman said.

Bohman said coaches are thrilled to see progress and bonds form through the club.

"Having the friendships and relationships that I create with the athletes is probably the most rewarding part, and then getting to see them cross the finish line," Bohman said. "That's super awesome."

Harris struggled with the Her Tern course in 2016, but improved this time around after group training.

"I think last year I was stumbling around, felt really tired, walked a little bit … I don't feel so discombobulated (now). Of course I haven't had my mimosa yet," Harris said with a laugh.
