UAA runners Chelimo, Kemboi claim titles at Western Washington meet

UAA runners swept the individual titles Saturday at the Western Washington Invitational cross-country meet in Bellingham, Washington.

Junior Emma Chelimo ran to her third victory in as many races and sophomore Felix Kemboi earned his first win of this season for the Seawolves.

Chelimo covered the 6-mile course in 21 minutes, 15 seconds. Strong finishes from seniors Zenna Jepchumba (10th in 22:05) and Danielle McCormick (18th in 22:25) helped UAA finish third in the women's team standings.

Nancy Jeptoo (29th in 22:51) and Ruth Cvancara (32nd in 22:56) completed the scoring for UAA.

"For our first race in nearly a month, I thought we raced really well," UAA coach Michael Friess said in a press release from the school.

"Emma defeated some very talented open runners for the win today. Danielle had a very good race today, and I am excited as we head into the championship part of our season."

Kemboi, who placed second to teammate Wesley Kirui in UAA's first two races, won Saturday's 10K in 31:40. Kirui, a sophomore, was 11 seconds behind in second place.

Sophomore Nickson Koech (32:27) and senior Jorge Sanchez (32:28) finished 10th and junior Kaleb Korta was 34th in 33:27 to power the Seawolves to second place in the men's team standings.

"Felix and Welsey both ran well today," Friess said. "We need our five-six-seven runners to close the gap as we move forward."

Next up for the Seawolves are the Nov. 3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships in Monmouth, Oregon.
