Top 49ers Named by Alaska Business Monthly
ANCHORAGE, Alaska—Alaska Business Monthly named the 2013 Top 49ers at an awards luncheon held at the Dena'ina Civic and Convention Center in downtown Anchorage Wednesday. This year's Top 49 businesses owned and operated by Alaskans took in $16.07 billion in gross revenue in 2012 and employed 71,272 people worldwide, 25,792 in Alaska.
The event was attended by nearly 500 business people from across the state who enjoyed a meal of orange and thyme beet salad, grilled Alaska salmon caramelized in a teriyaki glaze and finished with baby bok choi, jade blend rice with fresh wasabi and ginger, a medley of fresh seasonal vegetables, and a tuxedo truffle mousse cake for dessert.
The crowd was entertained by The Midnight Sons a cappella chorus Breaking Point Quartet and Bradford G. Keithley gave the keynote speech. The event ended with two sets of two round-trip tickets anywhere Alaska Airlines goes being drawn by Andrew Ogilvie, the company's Manager of Sales & Community Marketing for Alaska.
Alaska Business Monthly selects the Top 49ers by surveying Alaska companies with a short list of questions, including gross revenue for the previous year, employees (total and in-state), headquarters location, top executive, business activities, subsidiaries, and any recent notable events in the last year. To qualify for consideration a company must answer all questions, be at least 51 percent Alaskan-owned, and headquartered in Alaska. Once surveying closes, responding businesses are qualified, then ranked by gross revenue. Alaska Business Monthly has followed this selection method for the last 29 years, although surveys are now conducted online.
Arctic Slope Regional Corporation, headed by Rex A. Rock Sr., president and CEO, topped the list for the 19th consecutive year. Twenty other Alaska Native Corporations also made the list this year, representing the largest block with nearly $12 billion in gross revenues.
