Troopers say a 30-year-old DOC inmate in Kenai has died, and they’re investigating the cause

An inmate at Wildwood Correctional Center on the Kenai Peninsula has died, according to Alaska State Troopers.

On Tuesday at 12:21 p.m., the emergency dispatch center in Soldotna received a request for assistance from the prison, troopers said.

Troopers and medics in Nikiski responded. About a half-hour after the call, the medics pronounced 30-year-old Walter Shade dead. Shade was from Soldotna, troopers said.

The troopers did not confirm it in a dispatch, but online an inmate tracker says Shade had been in the custody of the Alaska Department of Corrections.

Shade had charges filed against him in three criminal cases in 2016, all of which involved theft of various degrees. All of the cases were pending, according to online court records.

The State Medical Examiner Office was notified of the death and requested Shade's body sent to the office for an autopsy.

"Foul play is not suspected but the investigation continues," troopers said. DOC did not immediately return a request for additional details.

Troopers have told Shade's family about the death.

Shade's death comes several days after a 40-year-old prisoner in Fairbanks died after being treated for alcohol withdrawal.
