High-speed chase in Juneau ends with arrest 20 miles later

A hunt for a stolen Subaru in Juneau late Friday night ended after a chase that covered 20 miles at speeds that reached 100 mph, Alaska State Troopers said.

The owner of the stolen 1997 white Subaru station wagon spotted it on Mendenhall Loop Road just after 10 p.m. Friday. Wildlife troopers worked with Juneau police to find the vehicle. A trooper spotted it on Glacier Highway near Auke Lake and tried to get the car to pull over.

But the driver fled, turning onto Egan Drive. Speeds got up to 100 mph, troopers said.

Police ultimately stopped it with spike strips on Fish Creek Road.

"The pursuit lasted approximately 20 minutes and covered a distance of approximately 20 miles," troopers said in an online dispatch.

Troopers identified the driver as Shaun Williams, 49, of Juneau. He was arrested on charges of felony eluding an officer, first-degree vehicle theft and reckless endangerment. He was also wanted on a warrant for misdemeanor assault.

Williams was taken to Lemon Creek Correctional Center, where he was being held initially without bail.

A passenger in the vehicle was interviewed and released, troopers said.
