Hydaburg man used a splitting maul to break into home and threaten family, troopers say

A Hydaburg man was jailed after he used a splitting maul to break into a home and threaten the people inside — stopping only when he was pepper-sprayed by a village public safety officer, Alaska State Troopers said.

Troopers wrote in a dispatch that 51-year-old Richard Carle became involved in an argument with family members inside a home in the Southeast Alaska community of about 400 people. Those family members were able to get him outside and lock the door.

"Carle then smashed the door down with a splitting maul he found outside the residence (causing approximately $500 in damages)," troopers wrote. "Once Carle had forced his way back inside the residence, he began threatening to kill both the family members present in the home while still wielding the maul."

When a VPSO tried to arrest Carle, he resisted until he was pepper-sprayed and restrained.

"As the VPSO was trying to seatbelt Carle into the vehicle, Carle spit at him and then broke a part of the vehicle's partition (valued at approximately $75)," troopers wrote.

Carle was held without bail at the Craig jail on two counts each of assault and criminal mischief, as well as one count each of resisting arrest and harassment.
