Anchorage skiers finish far behind

It looks like Anchorage's James Southam will be the top American finisher in today's 15-kilometer freestyle race at the Olympics, but he finished far out of medal contention.

With a handful of skiers still on the course, Southam finished in 48th place, four spots ahead of teammate Kris Freeman.

Southam's time put him 2 minutes, 21.9 seconds behind gold-medal winner Dario Cologna of Switzerland, who won in 33:31.3.

Earlier today at Olympic Winter Park in Whistler, Anchorage' Holly Brooks placed 42nd among 78 skiers in the women's 10-kilometer freestyle. She was the third of four American finishers.

Anchorage's Kikkan Randall skipped the race to prepare for her specialty, Wednesday's sprint race.
