Matyas, Whitney win White Mountains 100 endurance race

Anchorage cyclist Greg Matyas averaged 9.9 mph in winning the second annual White Mountains 100, a race for skiers, cyclists and runners held last week in the White Mountains National Recreation Area north of Fairbanks.

Matyas won in 10 hours, 10 minutes, beating Kevin Breitenback by six minutes and Jeff Oatley by 11 minutes.

The top skier, finishing fifth overall and 59 minutes behind Matyas, was Anchorage's Rob Whitney, who clocked 11 hours, 9 minutes.

Other winners in the field of 31 bikers, 28 skiers and six runners included Fairbanks cyclist Heather Best (11 hours, 4 minutes), Cordova skier Kate Anduser (13 hours, 30 minutes), Fairbanks runner Trystan Herriot (31 hours, 21 minutes) and Anchorage runner Anne Ver Hoef (32 hours, 42 minutes).
