Randall returns to celebrate World Cup title

Anchorage gets a chance to celebrate a home-grown world champion Tuesday at Kincaid Park.

Kikkan Randall, back home after clinching the World Cup cross-country sprint title, will meet with fans and show off the crystal globe awarded to her for winning the sprint championship.

Randall will be on hand from 4-8 p.m, with the official festivities beginning at 4:45 p.m. with a proclamation honoring her, delivered by Mayor Dan Sullivan.

At 5:15, the Alaska Pacific University ski team, of which Randall is a member, will lead a parade from the new biathlon range to the stadium that will feature Randall riding a pisten bully.

"We came up with this celebration because it seemed like not many people in Alaska realized what a big deal it is to win a World Cup overall title," said two-time Olympic biathlete Rachel Steer, who planned the celebration with her sister Becky Hauser, the Nordic Ski Association of Anchorage, the Alaska Winter Olympians Foundation and some of Randall's sponsors.

Those sponsors will be on hand with a variety of goodies -- Subway will supply some refreshments, Conoco Phillips will hand out cowbells honoring Randall, the Anchorage Women's Clinic will give away flying discs and Healthy Futures will have a booth with some giveaway items.

If you bring your skis, volunteers from the Nordic Ski Club will be on hand to offer free skiing tips. Members of the Junior Nordic League will set up a cross-country terrain park for people to try and members of the jumping club will put on a demonstration.
