East romped past a pair of Fairbanks teams Saturday to win the inaugural East-West Invitational, a four-team high school softball tournament at Albrecht Fields.
The Thunderbirds beat West Valley 15-3 and North Pole 9-1. Sydney Smith turned in complete-game performances to get the win in each game, scattering six hits against West Valley and limiting North Pole to three.
Gabby Meyerson drove in three runs and was 4 for 5 and Smith and Vaa Pedro both contributed two hits in the West Valley game.
Against North Pole, Morgan Hill and Meyerson were both perfect at the plate. Hill went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles and Meyerson was 2 for 2 with a triple.
In other action, West Valley defeated West 5-4.
South gets 3 wins
South blanked Kenai 10-0 Saturday, their third victory during a two-day road trip to the Peninsula.
Sisters Paige and Bayli Mohl were perfect at the plate for the Wolverines against Kenai. Paige was 3 for 3 and scored two runs and Bayli was 2 for 2, scored two runs and drove in one.
On Friday, South swept a doubleheader from Homer. Kellie Albright was 3 for 3 with a run and an RBI in an 11-9 victory and Sierra Mains was 3 for 3 with two runs and an RBI in a 14-5 romp.
The hot hitting of Angela James propelled Bartlett to a sweep of Eagle River in a Cook Inlet Conference softball doubleheader at Albrecht Fields. The Golden Bears took the first game 5-4 and the second game 6-5.
James went 3 for 4 with three RBIs in the first game, and pitcher Heather Breslin struck out six in the win.
James came through in the clutch in the second game, driving home Lauren Gallagher from second with a base hit in the bottom of the fifth and final inning. Samantha McFadden got the win, striking out three.
