WORTH NOTING
• A last-inning meltdown by the Anchorage Glacier Pilots allowed the Peninsula Oilers to take sole possession of first place in the Alaska Baseball League on Thursday in a 4-2 win in the first half of a doubleheader at Mulcahy Stadium.
The league lead didn't last long for the Oilers, however, thanks to a Tyler Spoon grand slam in the second game that helped the Pilots earn a 5-2 victory and move back into a tie for first in the standings.
The first game was tied 2-2 with two outs and nobody on base in the top of the seventh when Pilots reliever Jesse Delong issued two walks and hit a batter to load the bases. Oilers shortstop Josh Miller scored the go-ahead run from third on a passed ball and Riley Heinzer plated Alex Staehely on an infield single to give the Oilers some insurance. Nigel Nootbaar pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh to earn the win.
The Oilers (16-10) took an early lead in the second game, going up 2-0 in the top of the third inning, but Spoon answered with his grand slam in the bottom of the inning, putting the Pilots (15-9) on the road to victory. Jordan Luplow hit a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth to score the game's final run. Cody Gray struck out two in five innings for a win.
• After enduring two drubbings at the hands of the Mat-Su Miners in a Wednesday doubleheader, the Fairbanks Goldpanners rebounded for a 7-2 home win Thursday at Growden Memorial Park.
The Goldpanners (11-12) pounced early with three runs in the first inning and three more in the second. Chad Carroll led the Panners with three hits and three runs and Michael Zeblo and Blake Miller each drove in two runs. Carl Robinson struck out seven in five innings of relief for the win. Branden Berry drove in both runs for the Miners (11-17), who remain in last place.
