Baxter wins Mid-Am qualifier in Palmer

Fairbanks' Adam Baxter fired a 1-over 73 Wednesday to win the U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifier at the Palmer Golf Course.

Baxter's victory qualified him for a spot in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship next month at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill., where the winner will earn an invitation to play in the Masters.

Anchorage's Greg Sanders earned the first alternate spot by beating Homer's Chris Morin on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff, after both shot qualifying scores of 75.

New entry in top 5

Theresa Donhauser of Anchorage has moved into fourth place in the Seward Silver Salmon Derby with her 14.79-pounder, which was just .01 shy of tying for third place.

Tristan Borneman, 11, of Anchorage, continues to lead with his 15.71-pounder. Roger Groth of Nikiski is second at 15.37 and Jennifer Hemera is third at 14.79.

Donhauser's entry moved Joann Pfisterer of Anchorage down to fifth with her 13.86-pound catch.

The Derby, which features a top prize of $10,000 continues through Sunday.
