More awards for Seawolves
The UAA track and field team added to its collection of awards Thursday, when junior Micah Chelimo was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Male Athlete of the Year, freshman Karolin Anders was named GNAC Female Freshman of the Year and Michael Friess received GNAC Female Coach of the Year.
Chelimo's impressive indoor season included a 5,000-meter victory at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, where he was also fourth in the 3,000 meters. Chelimo, who was also named the West Region Male Track Athlete of the Year earlier this season, won GNAC titles in the mile, 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters. He also set two GNAC records this season, clocking 8 minutes, 11.73 seconds in the 3,000 and 13:51.19 in the 5,000.
Anders finished fifth in the pentathlon at the NCAA Division II championships, posting personal bests in all five events. She was second in the pentathlon at the GNAC championships.
Friess guided the women's team to a GNAC title, ending Seattle Pacific's nine-year run as conference champions and he was also named West Region Female Team Coach of the Year.
Program best equaled
The 14 UAA hockey players named to the All-Western Collegiate Hockey Association Academic Team on Thursday matches a program high set last season.
UAA seniors Chris Crowell, Alex Gellert and Scott Warner were each recognized for the third time in their careers, with seniors Tyler Currier and Daniel Naslund each receiving their second honors. Also picking up their second awards were juniors Matt Bailey, Brett Cameron, Chris Kamal and Quinn Sproule.
Junior Andrew Pickering picked up his first award, as did sophomores Scott Allen, Austin Coldwell, Corbin Karl and Kory Roy.
