A blizzard warning is in effect for the Anchorage Hillside and Turnagain Arm from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service. Snow and windy conditions are expected at lower elevations across the city as well.

By 9 a.m., light snow had begun falling over much of the city, the weather service said, and was expected to intensify by early afternoon, with 2 inches to 5 inches of accumulation, the most near the mountains.

"One fairly unusual aspect of this event will be widespread gusty winds," the weather service said in a statement Friday morning. Gusts to 30 mph across town are expected this afternoon.

Heavy snow is also forecast for the Susitna Valley, with 3 to 7 inches expected, the weather service said.
