I would like to thank Sen. Bert Stedman for his Compass piece on the recent billion-plus tax giveaway to the already wealthy oil companies in Alaska. The bill is irrational, infuriating and will cause much pain in the state's ability to pay for our budget needs in the near and far future.
Imagine the state, almost totally dependent on the taxes on our oil, trying to make up for the billions given away by Gov. Parnell and those 11 senators who voted for the giveaway. In my mind it's a stunning betrayal of the trust placed in those elected officials.
I very much appreciate Sen. Stedman's political courage and, of course, the other senators who did everything possible to stop this folly.
