From the Homer Tribune: A Homer resident who bought 70 pounds of blueberries in Anchorage and drove them home lost a good deal of them when a black bear first managed to open the door of a Subaru and eat some, then came back the next night and ate more blueberries stored on the resident's front porch.
Jason Herreman, Fish and Game biologist, said it isn't unheard of for a bear to figure out how to do these things, but it is rare.
"It is unusual," he said. "Once in a while, we get a smart one that learns how to open doors." ...
Bears are one-trial learners, he said. They only have to find food somewhere once before they understand that trash cans or other human-occupied areas can be sources of sustenance.
