Alaska sports digest: State's best young golfers compete

Nico Del Valle carded rounds of 82 and 80 to emerge as the top golfer at the two-day Alaska Junior Golf Association state championship Monday and Tuesday at Eagleglen Golf Course.

Playing in the division for 13-14-year-old boys, Del Valle shot rounds of 82 on Monday and 80 on Tuesday.

Finishing one stroke behind and winning the division for 16-18-year-old boys was Jake Eubank. Eubank shot the tournament's lowest round, a 77 on Monday, but his 86 on Tuesday put him at 163.

The only other golfers to break 80 were in the 13-14 division. Demetrius Johnson fired a 79 Monday and Gabriel Carreon shot 79 Tuesday.

Kyla Carlson took the girls title with back-to-back rounds of 85. Her 170 total gave her a 15-stroke victory.

Cycling: Loan takes 10th Tour

Sheryl Loan's 10th Tour of Anchorage title came at the expense of her daughter.

Loan beat daughter Kinsey by more than two minutes in the overall standings of the four-day, five-race series, using dominating performances in the hill climb and time trial to add to her record number of Tour titles.

Loan's total time of 5 hours, 38 minutes, 8 seconds out her 1:55 ahead of runnerup Kinsey and 3:03 ahead of third-place Amber Stull.

John Sindell took the men's title in 6:37:07, beating runnerup Jason Lamoreaux by 56 seconds.

Sheryl Loan won two of the five races, taking the Potter Valley hill climb with a 35-second edge over Kinsey Loan and the Point MacKenzie time trial with a 72-second gap over Stull.

Kinsey Loan won the Kincaid Park circuit race and the Martin Luther King Blvd. criterium; Stull topped the Point MacKenzie road race. In all three of those races, Sheryl Loan trailed by only a second or two.

The men's expert division produced four race winners, with Sindell capping his overall championship by winning Sunday's criterium, the final race of the series. Other race winners included Richard Tilton in the circuit race and road race, Daniel Folmar in the time trial and James Stull in the hill climb.

Running: Johnson sets 5-K pace

Signe Johnson clocked the fastest time, beating all the men as well as all the women, in Sunday's 5-kilometer Running With the Bulls at the Palmer Musk Ox Farm.

Johnson finished in 21 minutes, 45.89 seconds, finishing more than two minutes ahead of the next-fastest woman and about 17 seconds ahead of the fastest man.

Kenneth Conaway nipped Hunter Hayes by half a second to claim the men's victory in 22:02.56.

The 10-K titles went to John Bishop (42:34.20) and Angelica Remaley (50:54.6.).
