Service 13, West 12
Service's Haleigh Van Allen intercepted a two-point conversion attempt by West in the final seconds of a Cook Inlet Conference flag football game Tuesday at Anchorage Football Stadium, preserving a 13-12 win for the Cougars.
Service improved to 2-0, thanks in large part to a monster effort from Van Allen on both sides of the ball. One of her six receptions was for a touchdown, and she returned one of her three interceptions 90 yards before being chased down short of the goal line.
Service's Kyla Pearce harassed the Eagles (1-1) throughout the game, notching seven pulls for a loss to lead a defensive effort that produced six interceptions. Zoe Bailey returned one of those picks 40 yards to forge a 6-6 tie at halftime. Keaira Caldarera fired a 20-yard touchdown pass to Van Allen to put Service up 13-6 in the second half.
West came back to score on a 1-yard touchdown run by Anna Sophia-Roberts with five seconds to play. There was an option to go for a one-point conversion and tie the game, but the Eagles chose to play for a win. Sophia-Roberts also scored West's first touchdown on an interception return in the first half. She finished with seven pulls and two interceptions. Maya McPherson caught four passes for 67 yards, and Natalie Manskie recorded four pulls, a sack and an interception.
Dimond 26, South 0
Vanessa Tufaga scored two touchdowns Tuesday and led the Dimond defense with nine pulls to propel the Lynx to a 26-0 CIC flag football win over host South.
Dimond (2-0) scored three times in the first half to lead 19-0 at the intermission. Tufaga, who finished with 125 yards on six carries, opened scoring on a 14-yard reception from Tara Thompson and followed up with a 54-yard touchdown run. Thompson, who ran 19-yards for Dimond's third touchdown, completed 6 of 10 pass attempts and rushed for 66 yards on 10 carries.
Malia Lyken scored Dimond's last touchdown on a 25-yard run that accounted for the bulk of her 41 total yards on the ground.
South fell to 1-1 with the loss.
Bartlett 8, Eagle River 0
Bartlett picked up its first win of the CIC flag football season, taking down Eagle River 8-0 Tuesday at Eagle River High.
Bartlett's Kiera Stokes threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Valerie Sao in the first half, and Cheyenne Mann pulled a flag in the end zone for a safety in the second half. Madeleine Sereyko set up the Bartlett touchdown with a 40-yard interception return to the Eagle River 6-yard line.
The Golden Bears, who put together some nice drives that were stalled by penalties, improved to 1-1 and the Wolves fell to 0-2.
Chugiak 6, East 0
Janissa Arzie broke away for a 65-yard touchdown run in the third quarter Tuesday, to give Chugiak a 6-0 CIC flag-football victory over East at a rainy Tom Huffer Sr. Stadium.
The Mustangs (1-1) played stellar defense, twice halting East (0-2) at the Chugiak 5-yard line.
"The girls had a blast playing in the rain," said first-year Chugiak coach Marilyn Campnell.
