Chester Creek body ID'd; no foul play suspected

Update, 7:45 p.m. Wednesday:

Anchorage police identified a body found partially submerged in Chester Creek Saturday morning as 39-year-old Thomas Evan.

Police believe Evan was homeless and do not suspect foul play, said Jennifer Castro, police spokeswoman, on Wednesday.

A woman walking her dogs west of 19th avenue and C Street around 9:30 a.m. Saturday first spotted Evan's body lying in the creek and called police. Evan was not carrying any forms of identification.

Castro said the cause of death is still under investigation.

At about 9:30 a.m., a woman who was walking her dogs in the area west of 19th Avenue and C Street called police to report a body lying in the creek.

Officers found a lifeless man between 40 and 50 years of age, Anchorage police spokeswoman Anita Shell said in an email.

A preliminary investigation by police did not reveal signs of foul play. The man was not carrying any form of identification and may have been homeless, police said.

The man's death is the city's most recent outdoor fatality.

In December, two women were found dead from exposure just days apart.

The body of a 34-year-old was found in a van parked near downtown the morning after Christmas. Two days later, a 57-year-old woman was found inside a tent in a snow-covered stand of trees in Mountain View.

The Medical Examiner's office is in the process of identifying the man found in Chester Creek, Shell said. An autopsy will be conducted next week.
