Anchorage police say a man crossing East Tudor Road was struck by a vehicle late Sunday and soon after died from his injuries.

Police have not released details about the man's name or age, pending notification of his next-of-kin.

The man was walking across Tudor near Florina Street, just west of Elmore Road, in an area without a crosswalk when he was hit by a 2002 Chrysler 300 sedan going east, police say.

Witnesses called police at 11:12 p.m., according to a news release from spokeswoman Jennifer Castro. The man was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead just before 11:40 p.m.

The driver stayed at the site of the collision, police said. No citations or charges have been made regarding the collision, which remains under investigation.

Dorinda Medenis saw the accident, she said Monday morning.

Medenis, the manager at a Brown Jug liquor store on Tudor, had just stepped outside for air while her assistant took a smoke break when they saw two men walking on the sidewalk on the south side of the street, near Tozier Track, across from the store.

Medenis said she had a bad feeling right away. Then she watched as one of the men either stumbled into the road or started crossing on purpose.

"It was terrible," she said.

Medenis described the man as young, maybe in his late teens or early 20s, wearing a black shirt and jeans.

She said the car that struck him didn't look like it was doing anything out of the ordinary.

"They were walking down the sidewalk, it was looking like he was wanting to cross the street," she said. "I don't know if it was poor judgement or what."

The speed limit in the area is 45 mph.
