West nets another tennis championship

West High's Katie Brown and Allie Haynes defended their girls doubles title to help the Eagles defend their team title Friday at the Cook Inlet Conference tennis championships.

West produced four finalists and two champions to claim the team title. Service and South shared second place.

Brown and Haynes were the only repeat winners. To win again, they had to face their own teammates, Nasim Falconer and Savannah Paull, in the finals at The Alaska Club East. Brown and Haynes prevailed with ease, 6-0, 6-0.

West also boasted the girls singles champion in Ava Lekander, who held off Service's Silvanna Slusarcinc, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. The victory marked the second straight year a singles title went to a Lekander — last season, brother Reed won the boys singles title while Ava finished second to three-time champion Whitney Williams. Williams and Reed Lekander were seniors last season.

Taking the boys singles title was Dimond's Jayden Hodgson, who downed South's Joseph Hemry 6-2, 6-3.

Service captured two doubles titles. Christa Morgan and Nichols Benco claimed the boys doubles crown with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Seneca Scott and Chas Anderson of West, who finished second for the second year in a row. And the mixed doubles title went to Aden Moon and Huiling Zhao, who stopped Dimond's Kyle Stone and Caroline Requa 6-4, 6-5.
