Denali Park Road will open to Mile 30 by Saturday

Denali Park Road is expected to open to the Teklanika Rest Area at Mile 30 by Saturday morning.

Winter activities such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are fading. But more animals -- including Dall sheep, moose, caribou, coyote, lynx and golden eagles -- have been spotted in one of Alaska's most famous national parks, according to Denali National Park spokeswoman Kris Fister.

Toilets are open at the Teklanika Rest Area, in the parking areas on both sides of the Savage River and at the Mountain Vista trail head east of the Savage River campground. Other park facilities, including the campgrounds, remain closed until next month.

Snow, ice and mud remain in shaded sections of the 85-mile road to Wonder Lake. National Park Service workers are steaming culverts along the road and operating heavy equipment to help open the road.
