4 of 5 Government Hill bears captured by Fish and Game

Biologists have now captured four of the five black bears roaming Anchorage's Government Hill neighborhood, including the mother.

The sow was captured at about 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening on private industrial land near the railroad in Ship Creek, said Alaska Department of Fish and Game spokesman Ken Marsh.

Two cubs were caught Wednesday afternoon in live traps located in the same area, Marsh said.

The sow and two cubs joined another cub, captured earlier in the week, at the Alaska Zoo.

"We've got four down, just one more to go," Marsh said.

The public won't be able to see the bears during their stay at the zoo, Marsh said.

"Since they are going to be relocated to a wild setting, we want to keep them as wild as we can," he said. "We don't need to get them any more accustomed to human presence."

The cubs are on the cusp of independence. In the wild, they would probably be preparing to leave their mother in the next few weeks, according to Marsh.

Biologists intend to put radio collars on the animals in order to track them when they are released into the wild. A final location for release hasn't been determined.
