Celebrating 100 years: Anchorage centennial events

Citywide events are underway celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of Anchorage in 1915. Here's a list of some. More information is available at anchoragecentennial.org.

June 27

The Official Anchorage Centennial Citywide Celebration at Cuddy Family Midtown Park, noon-8 p.m. The party includes amusement rides, fair food, historical tents and local performers. The event coincides with the 10th Anniversary Celebration of Polynesian Culture Flag Day, which means lots of foods, dances and family activities from the diverse communities that make up our city.

July 2

"Anchorage: The First 100 Years -- A Theatrical Tour" will open at Cyrano's Theater Company, 413 D St., at 7 p.m. with dramatizations of the city's history drawn from the newspapers of the day, as created by local playwrights and presented by local actors. July 1-6 will focus on the first decade of Anchorage, 1915-1925. Each week through Sept. 6 will move the action forward 10 years at a time. Shows take place at 7 p.m. Monday and Thursday-Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are available at centertix.net.

July 4

Happy Birthday Anchorage, coinciding with the city's Fourth of July celebration, all day at the Delaney Park Strip. Enjoy entertainment, vendors and Centennial activities.

July 4

Throwback Game, with the Anchorage Bucs taking on the Glacier Pilots in uniforms from yesteryear. During intermissions and before the game there'll be Centennial facts about the city presented. Get in the spirit and dress like it's 1915. Starts at 6 p.m. at Mulcahy Stadium.

July 9

Preston Jones, a professional historian whose book "City for Empire" recounts the settlement from 1914-1941, will be the guest speaker for the Cook Inlet Historical Society. His talk starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Anchorage Museum. Enter by the Seventh Avenue doors.

July 12

Stories at the Cemetery will present actors in costumes telling the stories of 15 notable city founders at their graves, 6-8 p.m. at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery. Enter by the John Bagoy Gate at the corner of Seventh Avenue and Cordova Street. Park on the street, not on cemetery grounds. The event is free, though donations for the actors are accepted. The event will be repeated at the same time on Aug. 9.

July 16

"The Cheechakos" a restored print of the 1923 silent feature-length film produced in Anchorage and originally spelled "Chechahcos," will be screened while the Anchorage Symphony performs the soundtrack live. The program is free, but tickets are required, available at the CenterTix box office in the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts (hours, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday and noon-4 p.m. Saturday). There's a limit of four tickets per person.

July 24

The Anchorage Museum will be the site for the "Happy Birthday, Anchorage" party, 6-9 p.m., complete with cake and pinata. The event includes the launch of the Institute for Speculative Media's "Anchorage Narratives" walking tours, four self-guided, augmented reality tours around Anchorage based on a series of illustrated short stories published in 2015 by the Alaska Humanities Forum. Admission is half-priced as part of the museum's Friday night series Half-open, Half-off.

July 25-26

Anchorage Tent City Festival, sponsored by the Anchorage Chamber, takes place on the Delaney Park Strip. Organizers hope to include a re-enactment of the Tent City Land Sale that marked the beginning of the city, along with music, entertainment, games, food, drinks and door prizes in a "picnic-style celebration."

Aug. 1

Nike Site Summit Tour, a guided visit to the local missile site built during the Cold War. $40-$35. Two three-hour tours will take place starting at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Aug. 1 tours are mostly full at the time of this writing, but more are scheduled for Aug. 22 and Sept. 13. Reservations must be made at www.nikesitesummit.net 30 days in advance to comply with Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson security requirements.

Aug. 7

The 2015 Salmon Daze Festival will celebrate Alaska's natural beauty and resources with live music, a beer garden, vendors and activities for the family. It takes place 3-9 p.m. on the Anchorage Museum Quad.

The Cook Inlet Historical Society will present former Municipal mayors and charter commissioners in a discussion of the events that led up to the unification of the City of Anchorage and the Greater Anchorage Area Borough on Sept. 15, 1975. The talk is free and starts at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Anchorage Museum. Use the Seventh Ave. doors.

Sept. 12

The Alaska Botanical Gardens will host their annual Harvest Day and Scarecrow Contest with presentations and chef demos timed to the harvesting of the new Centennial-inspired Anchorage Heritage Garden. Bring a bag of produce from your own garden and add to our donation of thousands of pounds of local fresh produce to The Children's Lunchbox and Bean's Cafe. Prizes for the best recycled scarecrows in the Scarecrow Contest.
