Chugiak Post 33 owns top seed for American Legion state baseball

Chugiak Post 33 owns the top seed heading into Tuesday's opening game of the American Legion state baseball tournament at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

Chugiak delivered a 17-1 league record in the regular season to seize the top seed. Juneau Post 25 (16-2) and South Post 4 (12-6) earned the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, respectively.

A four-way tie for fourth place in the regular season – Dimond Post 21, Valley Post 35/15, Kenai Post 20 and Fairbanks Post 11 all went 11-7 – was broken by fewest runs allowed in league games. That tiebreaker positioned Dimond as the No. 4 seed, Valley as No. 5, Kenai as No. 6 and Fairbanks Post 11 as No. 7.

Fairbanks Post 30 (10-8) rounds out the eight-team field for the double-elimination tournament that continues through Saturday.

The state champion advances to the Northwest Regional in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Aug. 5-9.

South is the defending state champion. The last team to repeat was Dimond, which earned state titles in 2010 and 2011.

The state runner-up advances to the NW Cart Regional, Aug. 7-11, in Logan, Utah.

Alaska's eight-team state tournament is also known as the AA-level tournament.

Alaska's other seven American Legion teams kick off play Thursday in the double-elimination Matson Invitational at Bartlett High. The winner of that tournament Sunday will play the third-place finisher from the AA-level state tournament for the right to advance to the NW Cart Regional in Utah.
