Coast Guard suspends search for man missing in Bristol Bay

The Coast Guard announced on Saturday it had suspended its search for a 55-year-old man who went missing in Bristol Bay.

Roland Briggs was last seen leaving Egegik in a 43-foot boat with a green hull, a white cabin and a gray deck at about 1 p.m. Tuesday. He was en route to his home in Ugashik, a village of roughly 15 people about 16 miles up the Ugashik River.

In a release, the Coast Guard said it had searched more than 8,000 square miles and used HC-130 Hercules airplane crews and MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crews, Coast Guard Cutter Munro and the MH-65 Dolphin helicopter before suspending the search.

Briggs was transporting a "large amount of fuel" in 55-gallon drums to his village, a venture expected to take about 18 hours, troopers spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said Friday.
