UAA women's basketball team returns from Hawaii with 3 wins, banged up players

The UAA women's basketball team will return from a road trip to Hawaii with three wins and a couple of dinged up post players.

The Seawolves completed their three-game tour of Hawaii by beating Hawaii-Hilo 80-33 Friday night in a game in which 6-foot-1 junior Alysha Devine suffered a minor ankle sprain.

The win pushed UAA's record to 10-0 going into next week's GCI Great Alaska Shootout.

Devine's injury came a day after 6-1 freshman Hannah Wandersee injured an ankle in a 92-39 win over Hilo. Meanwhile, 6-3 senior Dominique Brooks missed the road trip with a knee injury.

"We're the walking wounded at the post," McCarthy said. "We ended up resting Hannah today. Alysha is day-to-day. She can walk on it. We're hopeful that they're probable for the Shootout."

Being thin inside is never a good thing for a basketball team, but it's something that can be particularly damaging for UAA at the Shootout, where the Division II Seawolves go up against Division I teams.

"Amen to that," McCarthy said. "We can have lineups that are undersized when play Division I teams but we can't count on undersized lineups the entire game."

UAA's healthiest inside player – 6-0 senior Megan Mullings – scored 20 points on 7 of 10 shooting, and 5-10 sophomore Sierra Afoa grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.

Senior guard Jessica Madison scored 19 points on 6 of 9 shooting – including 5 of 8 from 3-point range – to help UAA shoot 52.9 for the game.

UAA got 40 points from its starting five and 40 points from its bench. Every player logged double-figure minutes.

"Our bench is our advantage against a lot of teams, especially when you play back-to-back nights," McCarthy said. "With our bench, I feel it's a very, very similar talent level (to the starting five)."

Keiahnna Engel chalked up 12 points and five rebounds for the Seawolves, Jenna Buchann had 10 points and five rebounds and Kiki Robertson grabbed five of the team's 18 steals.

Defensively, the Seawolves harassed Hilo (0-2) into 25 turnovers and 26.0 percent shooting. Kim Schmetz led the Vulcans with 14 points.

UAA led 19-7 after the first quarter and 41-16 at the half.

The Seawolves fly home Saturday and open play in the Shootout on Tuesday at 8 p.m. against Pepperdine.
