South Anchorage Subway hit by armed robbers; 2 suspects at large

Police are investigating an armed robbery at a South Anchorage sandwich shop early Tuesday morning.

Police first received reports of the robbery -- at the Subway restaurant at 9001 Jewel Lake Rd., near Dimond Boulevard -- just after 7 a.m., according to Anchorage Police Department spokeswoman Anita Shell.

Shell said no injuries were reported in the robbery after the suspects entered the store with a gun and demanded cash. She said investigators have only limited information on the suspects and no word on whether they left on foot or in a vehicle.

"It looks like two male adults," Shell said. "Nobody's in custody."

Anchorage Subway locations suffered several armed robberies in late 2011, with Subway of Alaska offering a $10,000 reward for information after employees were pistol-whipped by suspects. In October 2011, employees at a Spenard Subway store were able to detain 48-year-old robbery suspect Alvin Archa Jr. until officers arrived to arrest him, although it wasn't clear at the time whether Archa was linked to the previous robberies.

Police ask anyone with information on Tuesday's robbery to call the department at 786-8900.
