Alaska baseball team on fire at Arizona showcase tournament

Through two days of play in the Arizona Senior Fall Classic, the Alaska Baseball Academy has been as hot as the desert weather.

The Alaskans won twice Thursday and once Friday for a 3-0 start in the tournament, the biggest and most-scouted tournament in the western United States.

This year's event features 69 teams and scores of college coaches and Major League Baseball scouts. In the last three years, more than 800 college coaches and 250 MLB scouts have attended the Fall Classic.

On Friday, the Alaskans ran their record to 3-0 with a 3-2 win over Team California, an all-star team from Southern California.

Jake Andresen of Dimond and Parker Johnson of South combined for 10 strikeouts in eight innings. Catchers Sladen Mohl of South and Michael Cesar of Juneau threw out a combined three baserunners to help Alaska win the pitchers' duel.

Alaska had a 6-4 hit advantage that included doubles from Jonny Homza of South and Tyrece Hudson of Phoenix.

On Thursday, Alaska took a 13-3 win over a Diamondbacks scout team and a 1-0 victory in a San Diego Padres scout team.

Juneau pitcher Bryce Swofford garnered lots of attention in the win over the Diamondbacks team with a fastball topping out at 90 mph. In four innings, he struck out seven and allowed three hits.

Alaska's 15-hit effort was led by Homza and Terrell Hudson, who collected three hits apiece, and Raleigh Pigg of Service and Paul Steffensen of Kenai, who had two apiece.

In the win over the Padres team, Pigg struck out eight in five innings and Paul Steffensen of Kenai drove in the game's only run in the final inning.

Alaska has two more games left in the tournament, which ends Sunday.
