"The ecology of the Arctic is changing at a fast rate," says Katie Christie a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Those changes are already having a dramatic effect on the landscapes and herbivores.

Because of the decrease in their alpine habitat, ptarmigan may serve as an ecosystem "indicator" species of how the future of the Arctic might look.
