Processions planned as body of fallen police officer is returned to Fairbanks

A police motorcade will travel through Anchorage on Tuesday as the body of Fairbanks police officer Sgt. Allen Brandt, who was shot in the line of duty last month and died of complications from surgery, is returned home to Interior Alaska.

The motorcade will leave the Alaska State Medical Examiner Office on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive around 11:45 a.m. and travel west on Tudor, south on Minnesota Drive and west on Raspberry Road on the way to the former Kulis Air National Guard Base. Traffic will be stopped at intersections along the route, police said.

An aircraft will then carry Brandt's body to Fairbanks ahead of a planned Sunday memorial.

A procession will also take place in Fairbanks when the plane arrives around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Traffic in the area will be stopped as the aircraft approaches, Fairbanks police said.

"Members of the public should arrive no later than 1:30 p.m. and can park along Airport Way East of Dale Road by Pikes Landing," Fairbanks Police Department spokesperson Yumi McCulloch wrote in a statement Monday.

"There will be limited access on Airport Way from University Avenue beginning at 1:30 p.m. so travelers going to the airport are advised to use the East Ramp off the Mitchell Expressway," the statement said.

A public memorial will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday in Fairbanks.
