Teen from China drowns in Kenai Peninsula river

An 18-year-old from China drowned in the Moose River on Monday afternoon, Alaska State Troopers say.

Yanting Jin was swimming in the Moose River in Sterling and disappeared underwater, troopers said. Troopers responded to reports around 7:30 p.m.

Central Emergency Services, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and private citizens launched boats and searched the area, troopers said. A specialized dive team from the Nikiski Fire Department found the teen dead in the river.

No foul play is suspected.
