Jet fuel overflowed Tesoro tank near Anchorage port, says DEC

As a fuel tanker filled a Tesoro tank Saturday night, more than 14,000 gallons of jet fuel overflowed and spilled into a secondary containment area near the Port of Anchorage, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation said Sunday.

The gauge meant to measure the amount of fuel in the tank malfunctioned as the tank was being filled, the department said in a release.

As soon as the fuel began to spill from a vent near the top of the 4.4 million gallon tank, Tesoro shut down the fuel operation. The company hired a spill response company that spent Saturday night cleaning up the spill, recovering 15,000 gallons of fuel and water, the department said.

"(The tank )is approximately 560 feet from the waters of Cook Inlet; however, all spilled product was captured within the lined secondary containment area," the department said.
