Bicyclist seriously injured after being struck by SUV, police say

A bicyclist was hospitalized with what were believed to be life-threatening injuries Tuesday afternoon after she was struck by an SUV in a crosswalk, Anchorage police said.

The collision occurred in the northbound lanes of Airport Heights Drive north of DeBarr Road just before 12:30 p.m., police said. The female cyclist was taken to a hospital and the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and was cooperating with police, they said.

The cyclist was crossing Airport Heights westbound at DeBarr when the SUV driver, who was also headed west, turned right to go north on Airport Heights, according to a police update. The SUV struck the cyclist while they were in the crosswalk, police said.

An investigation continues. No citations had been filed, police said Tuesday afternoon.

The northbound lanes of Airport Heights Drive were closed for several hours following the collision as police investigated the scene.

A pedestrian suffered serious injuries on Monday when he was hit by a pickup truck after he entered the road outside a crosswalk near the intersection of Arctic and West Benson boulevards, police said.
