Anchorage police officers who fired weapons during Hillside standoff named

The Anchorage Police Department has released the names of six officers who fired their weapons during a 42-hour standoff on the Hillside that ended in the death of Robert Musser.

Just before 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Musser stepped outside his home on Ginami Street off Upper Huffman Road and fired on police. Six APD officers returned fire.

The officers are Robert Wurst, Steven Childers, Matthew Barth, Daniel Henegar, Jason Penman and Seth McMillan, the Police Department said Monday. All of them were placed on administrative leave for four days.

"It was unknown during the time of the shooting whether any of the officers' shots injured the barricaded shooting suspect (Musser)," said APD spokeswoman Jennifer Castro.

An investigation into the shooting and Musser's death is ongoing, Castro said.

The state's Office of Special Prosecutions is leading an officer-involved shooting investigation to determine if the police were justified in using their weapons. APD will decide internally whether their actions were within Police Department policy.

Officers first responded to the 12000 block of Ginami Street shortly after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday when a man opened fire on power-line tree trimmers operating on a utility easement. The crew retreated without injuries. Police tried to contact Musser but he opened fire on them at about 4 p.m. that afternoon.

The standoff persisted for nearly two days before law enforcement breached Musser's home using heavy equipment and then found Musser dead, police have said.
