Juneau woman stabbed in head; suspect charged with attempted murder

Juneau police have identified the suspect charged with stabbing a woman in the back and head at a Mendenhall Valley apartment early Tuesday.

Brent M. Sanders, 26, faces first-degree counts of attempted murder and assault in the incident on the 9100 block of Cinema Drive, police said in a statement. Sanders was originally arrested when he returned to the apartment a few hours after the 1:30 a.m. attack, on a warrant for violating parole on previous charges of third-degree assault.

Juneau police spokesman Lt. David Campbell said that he hadn't heard any updates Wednesday on the condition of the victim, who was flown to Anchorage for treatment. She was able to immediately tell officers about the assault, however, despite the knife still being stuck in her head.

"The base of the handle was sticking right out of the temple," Campbell said. "When we arrived on scene, she was conscious and talking to us and we were able to get a statement from her."

In a criminal complaint against Sanders, JPD officer Lee Phelps said the victim suffered "several superficial stab wounds" to her left shoulder and left hand from the 4-inch blade. Three witnesses told police they saw Sanders attack her.

Phelps also spoke briefly with Sanders.

"I saw what appeared to be fresh cut marks on his hands," Phelps wrote. "I could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage on Sanders' breath and person and he admitted to be heavily intoxicated."

Police had said that Sanders also struck another woman in the face during the incident. Both victims were initially treated at Bartlett Memorial Hospital in Juneau, where Phelps said the second woman was found to have a broken jaw.

Sanders was being held Wednesday at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center.
