Teller man charged with murder in stabbing death

A 43-year-old man in the Northwest Alaska village of Teller was charged with murder Friday for allegedly stabbing to death a man during an argument, then turning the knife on himself.

Frank "Punchy" Lee is charged with first degree murder in  the death of William Johnson, according to a criminal complaint filed with the Nome court on Friday.

Early Friday "an argument brewed up between (Lee) and William Johnson outside Lee's residence" in Teller, an affidavit written by Alaska State Trooper Timothy Smith and filed with the criminal complaint says.

Teller is a community of roughly 250 people about 70 miles northwest of Nome.

As the men argued, Lee went inside his home and returned holding two knives, one in each hand, according to the affidavit. He "plunged one knife into Johnson's chest, killing him. Lee then stabbed himself in the abdomen," the trooper wrote.

Johnson died at the scene.

Lee was taken to Anchorage to be treated for his injuries. The affidavit says he is expected to survive.

At the time of the killing, Lee was still under parole supervision by the Alaska Department of Corrections for another crime: In 2010, Lee pleaded guilty to a charge of criminally negligent homicide in the death of his 7-month-old son to what authorities described "shaken baby syndrome" two years earlier.
