Man charged with murder in death of roommate in Midtown Anchorage

Update, Sept. 14, 2022: An Anchorage jury convicted Gilbert Dugaqua on Sept. 8 on two counts of second-degree murder and one of manslaughter in the death of his roommate, Teodoro Berdan.

Dugaqua admitted killing Berdan but said it was in self-defense, according to the state Department of Law.

He is scheduled for sentencing on Jan. 6, 2023.

Anchorage police say they have arrested a 53-year-old man for killing another man he assaulted in a Midtown home.

Detectives on Thursday morning arrested Gilbert Dugaqua on charges including second-degree murder and manslaughter, according to an Anchorage Police Department update.

Dugaqua called 911 just after midnight to report an assault involving an adult male and adult female inside the home in the 400 block of East 45th Avenue, near Tudor Road and C Street, police said. Officers responding found the man dead and a woman seriously injured.

Detectives later determined Dugaqua “physically assaulted the adult male victim in the upper body,” the update said. They are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the woman’s injuries.

The woman was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
