APD: Wendler Middle School student arrested after talking about ‘shooting up the school’

A male student at Wendler Middle School was arrested after making a comment to another student about carrying out a shooting at the school, Anchorage police said in an alert Wednesday.

According to police, the student told his peers "that he had a weapon in his bag and made a comment about shooting up the school.”

A student notified school staff of the conversation, said Alan Brown, director of communications and community outreach at Anchorage School District.

“No weapons were found,” police said.

A school resource officer, contacted around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, conducted interviews about the incident and arrested the student, police said.

“This is another situation where students came forward and did the right thing,” Brown said.

According to police, the charges have been forwarded to the Division of Juvenile Justice.
