Defense does it for No. 2 UAA women's basketball team in rout of Western Oregon

Two nights after allowing only 32 points, the second-ranked UAA women's basketball team put on another defensive clinic Saturday to roll to another victory.

In their 77-42 win over Western Oregon in Monmouth, Oregon, the Seawolves held the Wolves to single digits in the first two quarters and to 30 percent shooting for the entire game.

"Defensively that was the most complete game we've played, in terms of staying intense and playing with a great deal of effort," UAA coach Ryan McCarthy said. "They played hard the entire time."

Western Oregon managed six field goals the whole first half, when UAA built a 38-14 lead.

Jessica Madison hit three triples en route to a game-high 15 points and Megan Mullings and Hannah Wandersee each contributed 13 points.

Wandersee, a 6-foot-1 redshirt freshman from Kodiak, scored all of her points in the fourth quarter of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference game. She hit five of nine field goals and three of four free throws.

"If there was a player who really stood out, it was Hannah," McCarthy said. "She went off."

Madison, a senior guard, hit six of nine shots, including three of seven from long-range. She added six rebounds, five assists and two steals.

The Seawolves (26-1 overall, 13-1 GNAC) got double-digit minutes from 11 players, and they all contributed to the strong defensive effort, McCarthy said.

In two games, UAA has surrendered 74 points, an average of 37 per game. Though they gave up more points Saturday than in Thursday's 59-32 conference win over Concordia University, McCarthy said the team played better defense against Western Oregon.

"We gave Concordia a lot of open looks they just happened to miss," he said. "I thought tonight our ladies did a good job of covering up the holes."

The Seawolves outrebounded Western Oregon (3-19, 2-12) 42-27, an effort that included six boards apiece from Madison and Kiki Robertson and five from Mullings.

Senior point guard Christina Davis totaled seven assists against no turnovers for UAA and added five points. Jenna Buchanan and Keiahnna Engel each added eight points.

The Seawolves, who have played four straight games on the road, return to the Alaska Airlines Center this week for a Thursday game against Northwest Nazarene and a Saturday game against Central Washington.
