Editor’s note: The return of Poem Day

As regular readers and letter authors may be aware, the ADN generally doesn’t print poems submitted as letters to the editor. But one day a couple years back, we made a one-day exception to our usual policy, in the name of good fun (and, we hoped, not too many rhyming couplets).

Readers responded enthusiastically, flooding us with poems of surprising quality, humor and heart. It was a great success.

Therefore, April 1 will once again be Poem Day in the ADN’s letters space. If the muse strikes you, submit a poem to letters@adn.com, and we’ll print a selection of the poems we receive. Please identify your submission as a poem somewhere in the subject or body of the submission, so it doesn’t get misfiled.

Poems may be written on any topic, but extra credit will be given to those that touch on Alaska issues or local events. Being funny, insightful or poignant is not required, but is likewise a bonus. Regular rules that apply to letters also apply to poems — no foul language, hate speech or other material in poor taste.

If email isn’t possible for you, you can submit paper letters to 300 W 31st Ave., Anchorage, AK 99503. Whether submitting by email or in printed form, please send your offering by March 24 to make sure it arrives in time to be considered.

We hope you enjoy Poem Day, whether you’re writing or reading.
