Eagle River bowler Mohr tops PBA50 bowling tournament

Ron Mohr of Eagle River won his ninth career pro bowling title, and his first in five years, Thursday by cruising to a 213-194 victory over Bob Learn at the PBA50 South Shore Open in Hammond, Indiana.

Mohr, 61, jumped out to a 41-pin lead courtesy of five strikes on his first six balls.

His early advantage dwindled when he left a four-pin split in the ninth frame. But Mohr sealed the win — worth $7,500 — with a strike in the 10th frame.

"It's great to win," Mohr said in a press release from the PBA. "But when it's over, you still have to go home and mow the lawn and pick up dog poop."

Mohr is a two-time PBA50 Tour Player of the Year who joined the PBA's senior tour after he retired from his job in Alaska as an air traffic controller. He lives in Las Vegas now and has won more than $300,000 since going pro in 2009.

PBA Hall of Famer Norm Duke nearly ended Mohr's title hopes in a semifinal match. Duke needed a strike in the 10th frame, but left a pocket 7-10 split, giving Mohr a 210-200 win.

"If all Norm needs is a mark to win, he'll never miss," Mohr said. "He was by far the best bowler in the tournament this week, but I guess it was my turn."

Mohr's five-year title drought included 15 championship-round appearances in the past two years in the PBA tour for bowlers over 50. On Thursday, he was the only bowler over 60 to crack the top five.
