Another course record for Dimond runner Prosser

For the second time this cross-country season, Dimond High senior Sonny Prosser ran to a course record. And this time, he knocked his dad out of the record book.

Running on the Kincaid Park course that has been the scene of many state and region championships, Prosser won the Big 8 Invitational with a time that lopped 10 seconds off the 1993 record set by Miguel Gomez, a champion runner for West High during the 1990s.

Prosser stormed to a 5-kilometer time of 15 minutes, 24 seconds. The performance came three weeks after Prosser ran 15:07 to shave three seconds off the Bartlett High course record set in 2014 by Kodiak’s Levi Thomet.

Saturday’s meet was a preview of next week’s Cook Inlet Conference cross-country championships, and the Dimond boys and South girls served notice that they are teams to watch.

Led by Prosser, Dimond put five boys in the top 13 to take the team win with 35 points. Service grabbed second place with 64 points, an effort highlighted by Alexander Maurer’s second-place showing in 15:40.

In the girls race, Ava Earl and Robyn Miller finished 1-2 to lead a group of six South Wolverines into the top 13 of the girls race. South took the team title with 26 points and Service, led by third-place Tatum Witter and fourth-place Nowelle Spencer, placed second with 51 points.

Earl, the reigning CIC champion, outdueled Miller to win in 19:07. Miller finished in 19:14, well ahead of Witter (19:36) and Spencer (19:47).
