West Eagles tennis team nets conference title

The West Eagles captured the Cook Inlet Conference tennis championships and produced a big upset Saturday at the Alaska Club East.

In an all-West boys singles final, third-seeded Charlie Rush defeated his top-seeded teammate, Alex Sergiacomo, in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

Three of the five titles went to top-seeded players.

Chugiak’s Emilee Groth continued her undefeated season by winning the girls singles titles, Dimond’s Kate Debenham and Layna Debenham claimed their third straight girls doubles championship, and West’s Jack Coulter and Ethan Pickett took the boys doubles title.

In mixed doubles, third-seeded Steve Kilkenny and Carter Nelson of South triumphed in straight sets.

All of Saturday’s finalists will play in next week’s state tournament.
