Video: A spring tide on Turnagain Arm

Though vernal equinox marks the start of spring on the calendar, the season unfolds more slowly on Turnagain Arm. Ice still clogged the view from Beluga Point three weeks into March, providing countless focal points for the speed and power of the tide. But in the weeks since, the floes have dissipated, allowing for crystalline reflections of the surrounding peaks and unencumbered views of the bore tide as it swept southeast, forming a graceful line of churning whitewater.

Explore the beauty of the spring tide in this video essay by Marc Lester, photographed in March and April. The music, "Almost Down," was composed and performed by Anchorage musician James Glaves.
