Welcome to the Anchorage Daily News 2021 Summer Camp Guide! It’s the perfect time to plan for summer activities. The listings included here were collected during early spring - a very different season than the spring prior, yet still with many unknowns - and camp details may have changed. We recommend checking with each camp your child may be interested in for updates.

ANCHORAGE YOUTH HIKING & EXPEDITION CLUB

Location: Alaska Backcountry Trips/State Parks

Grades/Age: Ages 12-18 | Cost: TBA - contact us with group requests

Description: Into the Woods Alaska is offering hiking, camping and expedition programs for youth ages 12-18. Daily hiking trips will offer workshops for youth to gain new backcountry skill sets, while camping/expedition trips will guide youth toward self-sufficiency and a set of wilderness safety skills that will last a lifetime. For camping, we will provide each kid with their own bivvy sack, making it easy to social distance and have privacy, while keeping the bugs out. We will plan the logistics, food and supplies needed for our trips, but these trips will be all about getting kids to do things for themselves. Youth participants will level up their Alaska outdoor skills, dive into environmental science and build friendships, teamwork and self-sufficiency. 100% outdoors, 100% authentically Alaskan, place-based outdoor and environmental education through experiential, hands-on learning. BALLET STORY CAMP: CINDERELLA

Location: Alaska Dance Theatre Inc., Anchorage

Grades/Age: Ages 4-6 | Cost: $290

Description: An enchanted week awaits your child! Based on the classical ballet of Cinderella, this is a great opportunity for your tiny dancer to learn the story of this traditional ballet and its music, while also exploring the concepts of movement. Each day there will be a creative movement class, a nutritious snack, craft time and choreography. The week will end with a little performance of Cinderella. THE DOME SUMMER CAMP

Description: This summer, join us at The Dome for an amazing summer camp run by our incredible staff! Open to children ages 6 to 12, our day camp provides a summer filled with games, creative activities and sports! TRAILSIDE DISCOVERY CAMP

Description: Trailside Discovery Camp is an award-winning camp program in Alaska that provides a broad range of outdoor environmental education experiences for students ages 4 to 16 from all economic, social and cultural backgrounds. We provide summer camps at a variety of locations in Anchorage and Palmer. We also offer special winter and spring programs during school breaks.

AURORA KIDS WEEKLY THEMED GYMNASTICS CAMP

Description: The “Coyotes” - an outdoor program for 7-12 year old adventurers. Two-three days of moutain biking during each weekly session. Youth gain physical strength and technical know-how of different ways to recreate in and access our local Alaska wild spaces. INTO THE WOODS ALASKA’S “WOLF PUPS”

JUNIOR GOLF CAMPS

Location: Anchorage Golf Course, Anchorage

Description: Junior Golf Camps at Anchorage Golf Course for 2021. Must be registered and purchase camps online at anchoragegolfcourse.com under lessons tab for junior golf. SUMMER DAY CAMP!

ALASKA ROCK GYM SUMMER CLIMBING CAMP FOR KIDS

Location: Alaska Rock Gym, 665 East 33rd Avenue, Anchorage

Grades/Age: Ages 4-15 | Cost: $99/three-day session

Description: A climbing and activity camp for kids and young teens. A great introduction to indoor climbing for first timers, and an opportunity to advance skills and climb harder for repeat campers. CREATE ACADEMY: GREEN THUMB GARDENERS

SUMMER FUN CLUB

Description: Come join us for a fantastic summer! This long running program is held at Rabbit Creek Elementary where we have three local parks within walking distance. On any given day, your child might be biking - ages 5-9 stay on campus, ages 10-12 bike off campus - visiting a park or participating in a myriad of activities, such as: cooking, science, arts and crafts, gym and outdoor games, nature walks or hanging out with friends. CREATE ACADEMY AT PNA

SUNDERLAND RANCH HORSE ADVENTURE CAMP

Location: Sunderland Ranch, 10856 North Wolverine Road, Palmer

Grades/Age: Ages 7-15; Different ages each week | Cost: $550/week per child

Description: Our trail riding-based horse camp teaches a variety of horsemanship skills, arena play and trail rides to gain skill and confidence on horse back. Youth also learn greenhouse science, hydroponics, garden harvesting and using Alaska produce in the kitchen. On Fridays we will take a wagon ride to our pond and focus on Alaska outdoors skills, archery and wilderness skills, while enjoying paddle boats, campfires and nature hikes. Weeks may vary slightly depending on age range and skill. Sunderland Ranch is a 360-acre private ranch raising cattle, elk and hay. We are passionate about passing practical skills and enthusiasm of agriculture and our love of horses on to our youth!

SPENARD COMMUNITY RECREATION CENTER SUMMER DAY CAMP

Description: The Spenard Rec Summer Day Camp is a licensed full-day camp for children ages 6-12. Activities include but are not limited to: swimming and water safety, personal safety, outdoor recreation, sports and games, arts and crafts, hiking, field trips, bicycling and a host of other activities. It is a positive summer program for kids that will help build self esteem, friendships, skills and a basis for making positive recreational choices throughout a lifetime. Social skills such as consistent use of manners, resolving conflicts, accepting responsibility, natural cause and effect and playing effectively with others will be encouraged, along with the developmental skills that are appropriate for each child’s age and maturity level at all age levels.

CREATE ACADEMY: READY, SET, SEW!

Description: Students will learn to sew buttons, simple embroidery and necessary hand sewing skills as they make various projects such as stuffed animals, pillows, games and more. CREATE ACADEMY: SWIRLING SCULPTURES

Description: Art and engineering combine to create crazy contraptions and magnificent mobiles. Using balance, energy and design, build large scale moving sculptures that twirl in the breeze or ball machines that seem to defy gravity. Find inspiration in artists Alexander Calder, Anne Lilly and George Rhoads, who designed the ball machine sculpture Calliope Borealic at the Anchorage Museum. *This camp is adapted from a curriculum developed by the Edgerton Center at MIT.

CREATE ACADEMY: MINDSTORM ROBOTICS, BEGINNER-ADVANCED

Location: Pacific Northern Academy, 2511 Sentry Drive, Suite 100, Anchorage

Grades/Age: Grades 3-6 | Cost: $310

Description: Build robots that move, spin, push, light up and make sounds. Program them with visual drag-and-drop programming software. Design robots to complete simple and challenging tasks like driving through a maze. The project will expand and vary upon previous weeks. GIRDWOOD ARTS CAMP

Description: The Girdwood Fine Arts Camp fosters natural artistic talents by giving young artists instruction in the crafts and techniques of the fine arts. Arts Camp serves children age 5 through late teens. There are two sessions for the youngest campers - Primary, ages 5-8: morning and afternoon. Students closely collaborate with professional artists who are chosen to teach at Arts Camp for their ability to teach and inspire. The finest art materials are provided. Arts Camp is held for two weeks at the end of the summer in the spectacular natural setting of Girdwood Valley.
